The short version

  • Ventolin HFA (albuterol) is available for $25.80 per inhaler through GSK for You — no insurance needed. That is one of the lowest cash prices for any brand-name inhaler in the U.S.

  • Spiriva Respimat and Striverdi Respimat (for COPD) are available for $35 per month through Boehringer Ingelheim Direct — also no insurance needed.

  • Advair Diskus (for asthma and COPD) starts at $35 per inhaler through GSK for You.

  • All of these are brand-name medications sold directly by the manufacturer through direct-to-patient programs.

  • You still need a valid prescription from your doctor. These programs deliver the medication to your door.

Why are inhalers so expensive?

If you have asthma or COPD, you already know how important your inhaler is. It helps you breathe. It can stop an asthma attack. For many people, it is a medication they need every single day.

But at a regular pharmacy, many inhalers cost $300 to $600 or more per month without insurance. Even with insurance, copays can be high. This forces some patients to skip doses, split inhalers, or go without — all of which can be dangerous.

The good news is that some of the biggest inhaler makers now offer their medications directly to patients at fixed, low prices. These are called direct-to-patient (DTP) programs. You buy the inhaler straight from the manufacturer, skip the middleman, and pay a fraction of the retail price.

Ventolin HFA — $25.80 per inhaler

Ventolin HFA is a rescue inhaler made by GSK. It contains albuterol, one of the most commonly prescribed medications for asthma. You use it when you feel short of breath, are wheezing, or are having an asthma attack. It works fast — usually within minutes.

At a regular pharmacy, Ventolin HFA can cost $60 to $90 or more without insurance. Through GSK for You, you can get it for $25.80 per inhaler. That is up to 70% less than the typical retail price.

GSK for You is GSK's direct-to-patient pharmacy program. It is powered by Alto Pharmacy and delivers the medication to your door. You do not need insurance to use it. You just need a valid prescription from your doctor.

Advair Diskus — from $35 per inhaler

Advair Diskus is a daily maintenance inhaler for asthma and COPD. It contains two active ingredients — fluticasone (a steroid that reduces swelling in your airways) and salmeterol (a long-acting bronchodilator that keeps your airways open). You use it every day to prevent symptoms, not during an attack.

At a regular pharmacy, Advair Diskus can cost $350 to $500 per month without insurance. Through GSK for You, it starts at just $35 per inhaler. The price depends on the strength your doctor prescribes — it ranges from $35 to $64.

That is savings of up to 90% compared to what you might pay at your local pharmacy. Like all GSK for You medications, it ships to your home through Alto Pharmacy.

Spiriva and Striverdi Respimat — $35 per month each

Spiriva Respimat (tiotropium) and Striverdi Respimat (olodaterol) are daily inhalers for COPD. Spiriva is also approved for asthma in patients 6 years and older. Both are made by Boehringer Ingelheim.

At a regular pharmacy, Spiriva alone can cost $400 to $500 per month. Through Boehringer Ingelheim Direct, the price is a flat $35 per month. Striverdi is also $35 per month. These are cash prices — insurance is not used and not needed.

Boehringer Ingelheim Direct delivers through Eversana, a specialty pharmacy partner. Your medication arrives at your home.

How to get these prices

Getting your inhaler through a DTP program is simple. Here is what to do.

  1. 1

    Talk to your doctor

You need a prescription for any of these inhalers. If you already have one, ask your doctor to send it to the DTP pharmacy (Alto Pharmacy for GSK, or Eversana for Boehringer Ingelheim). If you don’t have a prescription yet, schedule a visit to discuss which inhaler is right for you.

  2. 2

    Visit the DTP platform website

For Ventolin HFA or Advair Diskus, go to GSK for You. For Spiriva or Striverdi, go to Boehringer Ingelheim Direct. You will see the exact cash price listed on the site.

  3. 3

    Place your order

Follow the steps on the website to submit your prescription and pay the listed cash price. No insurance information is needed. No forms to fill out. No income requirements.

  4. 4

    Get your inhaler delivered

Your inhaler ships to your home. GSK for You delivers through Alto Pharmacy. Boehringer Ingelheim Direct delivers through Eversana. Plan ahead so you don’t run out of your current inhaler while waiting.

Important things to know

You need a prescription

All of these inhalers require a prescription from a doctor or other licensed healthcare provider. The DTP programs do not prescribe medications — they only fill and deliver them. If you do not have a prescription, schedule a visit with your provider first.

Insurance is not required — but also not accepted

These are cash-pay programs. You pay the listed price directly. You cannot use your insurance to pay, and the cost does not count toward your insurance deductible. For many patients without insurance, this is still much cheaper than the retail pharmacy price.

Government insurance patients

If you have Medicare, Medicaid, or TRICARE, you may still be able to purchase these inhalers at the cash price. However, you cannot submit the cost to your government plan for reimbursement, and the amount you pay will not count toward your deductible or out-of-pocket maximum. Check with the specific program for details.

Shipping takes a few days

These programs deliver by mail. It usually takes a few business days to get your inhaler after your prescription is verified. Do not wait until you are completely out of medication to order. Plan ahead so you always have a backup.

Rescue vs. maintenance inhalers

Ventolin HFA is a rescue inhaler. You use it when you feel symptoms coming on — like shortness of breath or wheezing. Advair, Spiriva, and Striverdi are maintenance inhalers. You use them every day to keep your symptoms under control. Many patients with asthma or COPD need both types. Talk to your doctor about which one (or which combination) is right for you.
